Energy: equipment sets the schedule

On energy projects the principal equipment is made to order over months, and testing and connection are procedurally governed. The schedule is built from deliveries and handover procedures, not the other way round.

What is specific

What governs the project

An energy asset is the combination of civil works, principal equipment and a control system. Each of the three streams has its own schedule, and handover is possible only where they coincide. Hydraulic assets add seasonality.

Our sector experience. Current projects: hydropower plants HPP-1 and HPP-2 on the Kalzhir River (East Kazakhstan) and a natural gas pipeline for a basic oxygen furnace shop (Temirtau).

Risks

The governing risks in this sector

Each of these risks is closed by a specific management function.

Hydro-mechanical and electrical equipment takes months to manufacture and frequently sets the start-up date.

Hydrology and weather define short windows for in-river and retaining structure works.

Requirements for mass and water-retaining concrete exceed standard practice and require laboratory verification.

Testing, acceptance and grid connection follow set procedures involving the network operators.

Logistics, personnel accommodation and a limited local contractor base.
